Multicomponent Comminution within a Stirred Media Mill and Its Application for Processing a Lithium-Ion Battery Slurry

This study presents an approach for targeted comminution of component mixtures within a wet-operated stirred media mill. In the first step, general understanding interactions between individual components on grinding result with could be gained basic experiments and following our former research work. particular, protective effect coarser particles fines elucidated. These findings were used to develop process production battery slurry containing fine ground silicon as well dispersed carbon black graphite particles. By tailored sample preparation applying combination particle dissolution separation, size distributions analyzed separately produced slurries. Based selective analysis, transferred from complex multistage batch using dissolver mill, which was finally operated in continuous one-passage mode. The prepared slurries subsequently further processed silicon-rich anodes pilot scale coating drying plant. Afterward, electrochemically characterized full cells. cell results prove comparable electrochemical behavior anode coatings derived dissolver- or mill-based process. Therefore, we demonstrate that it is possible integrate mixing multicomponent into materials upstream.
